The Sydney International Speedway is a world class speedway within Western Sydney Parklands. The venue can seat 7,000 spectators and will host 35 events each year, including Australiaβs leading division, 850hp V8 Sprintcars.
Turnbull Engineering was engaged to provide multidisciplinary engineering services for the Sydney International Speedway project, a new speedway facility to be constructed on land owned and managed by Western Sydney Parklands Trust. The project scope included the design of a new speedway racetrack, access roads and carparks, new access from Ferrers Road (a Transport for NSW asset), drainage and water quality systems, multiple structures including buildings and retaining walls, and full utilities.

Drainage Solution
A centralised weir using the natural terrain was implemented as a beautifully simple solution that reduced construction costs and improved consistency with the desired outcomes of Western Sydney Parklands Trust.

Design development was accelerated using visual assessments of ground conditions before geotechnical testing could be completed.

Project Highlights
Time Savings
Our elegantly simple natural weir solution replaced the need for several onsite detention tanks to decrease stormwater discharge. This also allowed faster construction with less material and maintenance costs.
Cost Savings
Turnbull worked with the constructor to reduce the cost of retaining structures and pavements by refining structural forms and materials.
Design Innovation
A lightweight expanded polystyrene retaining wall was implemented for faster construction and long term durability.
