Future City Shapers
FAQ
Do you accept international students?
Yes, we welcome applications from international students for both internship and graduate roles.
How long is the graduate program?
Our Future City Shaper graduate program typically runs for three years, with opportunities to progress earlier based on individual performance and development.
When does the program start?
Graduate roles generally commence in late January or early February. Internships usually begin around November, aligning with university end-of-term breaks, continue over the end-of-year period, and can often transition to part-time work once university resumes. As a project-based consultancy, we also hire throughout the year when new projects commence, so if you are available to start earlier, please note this in your Expression of Interest.
Does Turnbull Engineering offer structured team rotations?
Rather than fixed rotations, we encourage graduates and interns to take ownership of their career journey. If you’re interested in exploring different disciplines, you’ll be supported to do so - and if you find a team or project you enjoy, you can continue to build experience there. New young professionals typically begin in the civil team unless they have a strong interest in another discipline. Support is provided through buddies, senior mentors, and performance coaches to help guide your development.
What is the hiring process?
Our process is designed to be straightforward and personal. It includes an online application, an interview, and discussion around a real engineering scenario. Interviews are conversational rather than highly formal, giving both sides the opportunity to get to know each other.
Do you only take penultimate-year students for internships?
No - we have welcomed students from earlier university years, including second year, many of whom have continued working with us through to graduation. We focus on passion, curiosity, and willingness to learn rather than what you already know.
What makes Turnbull Engineering unique?
Turnbull Engineering offers a supportive and collaborative environment with a strong focus on learning and development. Graduates benefit from structured on-the-job training, playbooks, performance coaching, and regular knowledge-sharing sessions. Our culture values collaboration over competition, supported through the Future City Shaper cohort, social events, and development activities. With minimal bureaucracy and performance-based salary reviews held twice a year, without fixed budgets for pay increases, we aim to recognise growth and help our people build meaningful, long-term careers.
